In an emergency, contact the Virginia Tech Police Department by calling 9-1-1.

Non-emergency calls may be made to the Virginia Tech Police Department at 540-231-6411.

Virginia Tech personnel who work at off-campus sites should inquire with local officials about the proper procedures for requesting emergency assistance, including the use of cellular phones. Most Virginia locations use 9-1-1 for emergency calls. However, use of cellular phones at off-campus sites to request emergency assistance may involve delays similar to those described above, depending on how the call is routed.

To report an on-campus crime:

  • For other sorts of criminal or public safety issues on-campus, even if they do not seem urgent, call the Virginia Tech Police - www.police.vt.edu - 540-231-6411 or 540-231-3952 (TYY).

To report an off-campus crime:

  • Incidents that occur off-campus can be reported directly to the law enforcement agency with jurisdiction where the incident occurred.

  • Montgomery County Sheriff's Office - 540-382-2951.

To request additional help on-campus:

  • Request safe transportation or a walking escort anytime, dusk till dawn, to and from anywhere on campus by contacting Safe Ride - 540-231-SAFE (7233).
  • Visit the VT Police Department on Southgate Drive, behind Lane Stadium, in the Sterrett Facilities Complex.
  • A satellite Police Office is open during the day in the War Memorial Gym - 540-231-2268.
  • Blacksburg Fire Department - www.blacksburgfire.org.
  • For any location, call 9-1-1 and activate the nearest fire alarm.

Conditions that affect the safety of residents - such as flooding, electrical power outage, broken windows or locks - should be reported promptly to the Resident Advisor (RA) or Hall Supervisor (HS) on duty. During the evening or overnight, the RA or HS can contact on-call housing personnel to address the problem.

During normal weekday business hours or to escalate concern about a work order, contact the Office of Student Programs - 540-231-1111.

Any student resident can submit an online work order sps.studentprograms.vt.edu for maintenance issues in his or her room or suite. Work orders for common areas in residence halls are usually written by an RA or HS.

  • Immediately call the Virginia Tech Police Department or local emergency dispatch at any location by dialing 9-1-1.

People within a disaster-affected area can register themselves as “safe and well”. Concerned family and friends who know the person’s phone number or address can search for messages posted by those who self-register. This is a service of the American Red Cross.
